I did not know that. Did that make for less slack or slap in the rope?

I know the Cal Cable RR Co. used a side grip and I believe the slot was somewhat offset and more so west of Van Ness?

Still DPW must have opposed beyond Van Ness - they would not have liked cable cars stopping in the middle of California St. intersections with Franklin and Gough, DPW's little one-way quasi-freeways. DPW also wanted the cable tracks off of Pine St and the downtown crowd wanted the tracks off of O'Farrell. Mrs. Klussmann was up against up real hard asses in 1954.

Still an intact O'Farrell, Jones & Hyde Sts. line might have somewhat gentrified the Tenderloin neighborhood it traversed and which has now really gone down the dumpster. Apparently Willie Brown has suggested in the past turning the Cal Cable south at Polk St. and onto the City Hall area to re-invigorate.
