Earlier post mentioned that UP is considering running on the BNSF between Spokane and Sandpoint. This is part of a government program called Bridging The Valley, a plan to eliminate nearly all grade crossings in the Spokane and Rathdrum Valley and right now is barely funded to the tune of $12 million to build the first overpass starting this summer at Havanna St. The idea is to eventually build a third main between Spokane and somewhere around Athol and move the UP (SI) there to eliminate all the UP grade crossings in the valley. Also in the plan is to build bridges over all the BNSF grade crossings. I'm not certian just how high a piority this project is since they are building the first overpass over the least used crossing in the valley. Another depot worth looking at it the STMA depot in St. Maries, ID. The MILWEST web site has a decent collection of Milwaukee Road west photos posted on it.
