LIRR, NJT and Metra all operate both diesel and electric commuter rail. Since the National Transit Database Operating & Maintenance cost data is presented by mode and not propulsion power, the data presented for these systems will not be useful in understanding the costs of electric compared to diesel.

A better approach, if one can obtain the data, would be to compare the costs of Metra's electric service with its diesel service.
