Too bad Charlie is not still with us to try to answer your questions. The extant cable cars have been extensively rebuilt of course and I think some parts have been saved and incorporated into other cars and new cars.

IIRC the original Sacramento-Clay Sts. line after 1906 used some rebuilt and regauged standard gauge cars from most likely the abandoned Market St. cable lines. The #19 is still with us I am pretty sure. That line enjoyed good traffic until the ferries were abandoned after the opening of the Bay Bridge.
