When I asked about "servicing" upon seeing new cable car trucks being fabricated in the 1980s in Elkton, I was told they built the trucks, packed the journals (with oiled waste), and then never serviced them again. I found this rather difficult to believe, but since then I've run across examples of Muni "maintenance" which give the story complete credibility. The other thing is that since car speed is so low (9 mph), you can literally "get away with murder" when it comes to the non-servicing of journal bearings

Yes, the axle generator experiment was a failure.
