Cable car batteries are plugged in and charged overnight in the car barn. A generator belted to an axle was tried on one car 40 years ago but did not work out well.

The Sacramento & Clay was abandoned in 1942 when Market St. Railway raised its fare to 7 cents. Muni and the nearby California St. Cable Railway remained 5 cents. Many passengers walked over to the parallel and more frequent Cal Cable.

Big 19 is still with us and may venture out soon. Tests are under way.
