Resurrecting the Altamont line is interesting but I think a dead issue. The ROW is still there but not sure of the ownership these days and the WP grade was always much better. Portions of it may have reverted to surrounding property owners but like Niles Canyon I believe most of it was land grant to the original CP. Does UP still hold title? Does it have to be used for a transportation corridor only? There is one tunnel on the east side. I'm sure UP has done the numbers thoroughly on resurrecting the old Byron line.
