OK, you want some examples of a "sloppy job"?
1) The piston rod packing was leaking prior to the departure from Cheyenne to Utah. Why? Well they had the piston rods ground/polished (whether they needed it or not), but have the entire length properly finished. Thus, the very first revolution of the drivers, the step/rough area of the piston rods dislodged the rod packing.
2) Unlike the perfectly pristine boiler jacketing on 844, which was done by an outside professional sheet metal contractor, the jacketing 4014 looks like some amateurs did it.
3) Apparently the oil conversion is not quite working out as "planned", as there has been difficulty in maintaining boiler pressure.
4) The rod bearings are making an increasing amount of noise. This may be a result of the power reverse being hooked up a bit too far, at low throttle setting, thus not providing enough "steam cushion" in the cylinders.
5) Look closely and you will see that there is NO insulation & jacketing on the bottom of the boiler.
