Manure fertilizers predate petro-chemical ones by decades. You can't really grow food, particularly in marketable quantities, without using either. The trend over the last 20 years is "natural", and that means manure fertilizers. Both deliver the same plant foods. Always wash you lettuce thoroughly before consuming it.
