Obviously you've never been around coal using areas. Take a look at 1940s era pictures of the downtown areas of Boston, NYC, Philly, Chicago, etc and compare them to pix from the same era of downtown San Diego, LA, SF, Portland, and Seattle. The SD, LA, SF, PDX, and Seattle buildings are light colored, while buildings in all the others are black with coal soot. The others are light colored now because the weather has finally washed off the decades of soot accumulation. Also think of the notorious London fogs of the same era. When I was in Sydney on R&R in 1970, the NSWGR was still running coal fired steam engines, and you couldn't touch any horizontal surface without picking up a lot of soot and cinders. Coal is absolutely filthy.
