Well understood, but this isn't the 1940's and nobody is burning coal in furnaces on a large scale. I agree, there is no legitimate argument for the continued use of coal. However, simply eliminating these good paying jobs that support families and the tax base, there should be a requirement to find any displaced worker a similar replacement job.
Although I'm against most forms of welfare, if we're going to blow hundreds of millions of dollars annually on illegal aliens in California, maybe we could guarantee those 62 American union workers an early retirement. Let's put our money where our bleeding-heart mouths are and pay whatever it takes to eliminate the coal industry while giving actual Americans some of those entitlements they've been paying for their whole lives.
