There are lots of competent, professional people working for CDC and other public health organizations. They are muzzled at the moment by the politicians in charge. They need a change of leadership, but realistically it won't happen while this administration is in charge.
Then, all those "conservative" financial types were complaining about those evil retirees and their unfunded retirement systems (that especially at the corporate level are unfunded because the company and its management stole all the plans' resources to give themselves raises and stockholders ever-increasing dividends). If this virus does manage to kill 20% or more of those over 60, it'll fix things for them; the plans will suddenly no longer be on the hook for paying for a lot of long-term retirements, so there will be a new pot of money to loot.
