The next few years should be interesting once the tunnel is actually crowned out. Regardless of whether or not the Boylston route is rebuilt, or capacity of the E'burg - Pasco is increased, I suspect that many half forgotten sidings will be restored and placed back in use between Auburn and E'burg for openers, if not on to Pasco... One advantage of doing the Boylston thing is avoiding much of the already crowded Lakeside sub and the Pasco hub, especially for "Z" and other time sensitive movements. So which is more cost effective to BNSF? Rebuild the Boylston route, or double track the Lakeside sub and enhance the Yakima Valley sub and around the Pasco hub? Directional movement with UP on its Washy and the Lakeside sub? Can a single crew operate trains between E'burg and Spokane if the Boylston route is rebuilt? Or maybe all of the above? An interesting equation indeed.
