The UP pool trains headed south from Union Station, across the Steel Bridge and then headed north through Albina Yard and then joined the Portland main line at North Portland Junction. All UP trains that served Union Station were serviced at the Portland Terminal Railroad's facilities in Lake Yard. Locomotives for these trains were serviced at the UP's facilities in Albina Yard. The Terminal Company also serviced the SP's trains at Lake Yard while the SP's locomotives were serviced at SP's Brooklyn Yard.
In the 1950's UP did a major rebuild to Albina Yard that removed the UP mainline through Albina Yard. It was at that time that UP got trackage rights for passenger trains to operate north out of Union Station over the SP&S/NP tracks (the current Amtrak route between Portland and Vancouver).
