Thanks to Dave for lighting a fire under us on this one. I highly recommend "King and Queen of the River" by Stan Garvey to the uninitiated. Maybe digging up a copy of the John Ford film "Riverboat Round the Bend" is in order. It was filmed in 1935 near Stockton using C.T Co. frieght steamers dolled up as Mississippi River boats. Some of the King and Queen crew members had bit parts. I was always amazed my Aunt could do the 24 hours between Eureka and Sacramento by train and boat. I'm sure it wasn't as glamorous as we might think. Remember you can still visit the King in old Sacramento.
