Brian, I think you'll find that my numbers are high because the Siskiyou Line is an extreme
example of shortline railroading. You've got near 4% grades and the associated costs of enough
power to get over the hill, the need for two crews to make a Weed Turn and as I mentioned the
lack of through freight. For many years the volume of traffic to Woodland off the Grants Pass
Eugene corridor was sizeable and was handled (post CORP) largely to the UP at Eugene and given
back via the Davis Turn to the CFNR. A P&W/CORP/CFNR trackage rights train would have made the route way more profitable cutting out the expensive UP handle between Eugene and Davis allowing the freight to go down the West Valley line and directly into Woodland. The combined lumber/steel/
chemical traffic out of the northwest averaged some forty cars for many years. Yah it would have
cost bucks to get over the hill but at least you had more traffic footing the bill.
