Anyway, Eisenhower (who had spent most of his Army career in supply and logistics) was widely reputed to "hate" the railroads. Besides, in the 1950s-60s America only wanted things that were "new." Railroads were "old" and therefore "bad." I remember BART went to great lengths to make sure we understood it wasn't a "train," because train=old=bad.
