I rode the two day steam excursion on the McCloud behind the 19 back in 1994 and had a great time. The McCloud River Railroad was operating to Mt Shasta City, Lookout and Burney hauling lumber, hopper cars of diatomaceous earth and seasonal loads of sugar beets. It had a nice shop area and seemed like a very active short line railroad. I was also impressed by the town of McCloud. It was a nice little community supporting an active sawmill and tourist industry.
I finally got back to McCloud a couple of years ago. The railroad was shut down and overgrown with weeds. ROW to Lookout and Burney torn up. The mill was shuttered. Multiple businesses were closed and it seemed like there was a large number of homes for sale. It was definitely not the same place. Kind of sad.
