The power grid is pretty robust, and doesn't depend entirely depend upon hydro, and most of the commercially viable clean alternatives are not necessarily coming from solar panels. And, when they put those windmills off of Eureka, out on the shelfs, out in the vast wind strean of the easten Pacific, where the wind blows 24/7. And, since that source can theoretically power half of CA, from just that tract, we should be just fine. It seems that Denmark's electric trains are able to have enough electricity to run on, where 51% of electrical power is from wind, with virtually no source of hydropower at all to speak of.
Then, of course are these amazing new generations of tidal, current, and wave powered electric generators, which are now producing very cost competitive electricity. And, then there are some of the recent advances in fusion that have occured. There are even a new generation of much safer nuclear technologies to generate electricity with.
So, given the progress in these areas, just maybe, we'll be able to muddle through, and find enough new sources to power the trains....
Then anyone who wants to, even you, can hump as many of the tree's as they want.....
