I remember hitting the ground in the rain with the #70 on the Annie and Mary. Coming down the hill one rainy night I was the rail raise out of a ponded section of track just after a crossing next to an abandoned mill. We got stopped with just the front truck on the ground. We called in and got frogged back up fairly quickly. THey still had the frogs in the truck as they had just got back to Eureka after spending two days rerailing a train downriver from Dos Rios.
I've been thinking about the Arcata and Scotia locals - they only worked 5 days a week, but ran 6 days. On Friday night one crew ran (#70?) from the A&MR all the way through to Scotia and tie the engine up there. On Sunday night, the other crew ran one way from Scotia back to the A&MR. Maybe this was only when the passenger ran, otherwise M-F trading cars in Eureka?
