Also, BART tunnels are not nearly as tall as conventional railroad tunnels. In fact, they are circular in cross-section. Maybe the broad gauge actually makes it possible to better fit into a circular bore, when compared to the very tall rectangular cross-section of a regular train.
In any case, the custom-built nature of virtually every rail-transit system in this country makes the extra cost of building wide-gauge wheelsets and trucks a very small additional cost.
