I rode BART to the station just before the Airport on the very last day of free Spare the Air. Believe me that car was embarrassingly noisy, especially on the newest tunnel trackage. If I were BART management I would have been embarrassed and apologetic. Plenty noisier than the Muni Metro or the PCC's that I used to ride thru the Twin Peaks and Sunset tunnels in the sixties.
Maybe BART will do better with their new equipment. They need to turn over the design to an outfit that has no investment in or attachment whatsoever to the original Rohr concept. Some Europeans who are used to higher standards of comfort and performance. And paint the damn things! Any color other than gray aluminum. I can see stainless steel but aluminum gray? Yuck.
Maybe they should have the cojones to experiment with resilient wheels since BART only goes 80mph tops. I believe Siemens has built some lrv's with 70mph capability and I would assume they kept the resilient wheels. Otherwise they would be damn noisy on street trackage. As noisy as BART.
