The old station at 3rd and Townsend could have never played a role in high speed rail. If it had not been torn down in 1975, it sure as hell would have fallen down in 1989. It was built as a "temporary" structure for the 1915 Worlds Fair and was supposed to be replaced by a station behind #65 (later #1) Market St. Only problem was, temporary became permanent.

As far as a station for HSR, given the fact it will out boondoggle BART and just about any other civil works project known to man or politician, maybe planning for the San Francisco HSR station should place it out in Wells, Nevada or some other just as usefull place.
