Good Idea, but go straight over the Grapevine, or west of it; not on some circuitous longtime obsolete route that adds 50 to 100 miles. Passenger services never succeeded on that route anyhow, because of the circuitry. ATSF was smart enough to not even bother, it was so obvious to them.
Come to think of if, Both the ATSF and the Q were always very pro-passenger, and good at it too. Now BNSF still does a much better job of it - still smarter. Give it to the BNSF to do. UP will just "utterly pathetic" it all up - much as they already do to Amtrak.
But oops! There ain't any money to do even that. All the money - plus a bunch more - has already been spoken for; by broken useless public screwals, welfare junkies, illegal immigrants, and every misguided social do-gooder, between here and the other side of hell!
