Couple of answers to questions above:

Yes, portions of the donation should be tax-deductible. I don't deal with that end of it, but it appears that anything above the cost of a similar service (ie: an Amtrak ticket between similar points) should be deductible. As John West mentioned, a tax preparer or tax lawyer could give the accurate answer.

The donation levels were influenced by many factors. We're trying to do the best we can to preserve a now vanished piece of history and, as anyone working in railroad / aircraft / ship restoration knows, it is expensive. Plus, as mentioned, this is a very special train. Every guest who was with us yesterday expressed their enjoyment of the trip and all felt it was worth the donation.

The steam crew were fantastic and very professional to work with.
