This is a mercy killing. They spent almost nothing on maintenance and/or upgrades, with the result that the cars had become incredibly shabby and cheesey inside and out. The cars are in desperate need of paint and new interiors. The exterior looks good from a distance and at speed, but they are a mess close-up.
ANSCO had/has a contract with UP; UP has never tried to get out of it.
This was decision by ANSCO based on several factors. Probably the biggest being to loss of Union Station as a beginning/ending point for the trips and the loss of all parking around the station for it's customers. The DUT redevelopment plan sees all 5 tracks and the bus lane being torn out for several years, but only 1 or 2 tracks will be put back in when it's all done.
