The Union Station redevelopement plan has, from the beginning, been more about building new buildings on every inch of ground around the station than it has been about transportation of any kind. Most people have yet to tumble to that.
Both parking lots at DUT are the site of new high-rises. The property behind the station, now occupied by tracks, a bus lane, and the light rail station, are all set to be covered with new high-rises and lofts. The light rail station is supposed to be moved over next to the Joint Line, so it will be several blocks from the big station and the airport line terminal.
They want to put any train tracks underground at the station, so no ground will be occupied by tracks and can thus be built on.
When it's all over, there will be very little left for rail, light or heavy, and the terminal building will be surrounded by high-rises.
