Ahhh.....another locomotive expert!
Since I have had the unique experience of having worked on them, run them, including the NWP unit, gensets are much more capable of hauling freight at speed as well as pulling much more tonnage including one 6 axle unit lifting 14,000 tons from the arrival bowl at Roseville onto the lead, with the trailing conventional in isolation. While I agree they had some initial and continuing issues that adversely affected availability, once maintained they perform with the same tractive effort as current mainline locomotives.
I also like the cabs, as they offer good visibility forward and better noise and comfort levels.
I do like the "germsets", haven't heard that one in a while.
Sierra Northern has acquired a big fleet, and these are reliably handling volume frieght at several locations. Tie and effort make these reliable runners.
Refer to "D-Day on the Western Pacific" and look how bad EMD FTs performed, replacing rings after one run up the canyon.
Hope this is enlightening,
Wes
