Re: Meanwhile, for folks who come to AP for the choo-choo's... This may be bad news for CARB's locomotive emissions rule.

Well said, I did represent RJ Corman, hence my extensive experience with their Gensets.
As when diesels displaced steam, resistance to change is part of railroading. The gensets do not represent the end all, but in lower horsepower applications, especially with their advanced traction control, they are a good solution. They also have an advantage that they perform the majority of their work with 660hp, which is run 1 and 2. They also eliminate track burn, as even when sitting on a track covered with grain they won't slip. Also they have redundancy so if a prime mover is out, you still have a working locomotive.
I was disappointed Corman did not respond to issues, and in particular Deutz shortcomings, but after Railpower ceased operation, I was able to help address most of those issues on our fleet of over 30 locomotives at SNR. These included heat, cabling, software, maintenance and cooling system problems. The big difference was EMD did solve those issues on earlier models, Deutz and Railpower were not proactive in this department.
At Roseville, our error logs of 512 entries was always getting overwritten, at SNR, that will last a year, including the power up entries. We have made a quantum improvement in reliability, and virtually all of the issues that plagued these mainly Texas locomotives have vanished.
BTW, replace tie with time and it reads a bit better.
