I recall seeing pics of the " GRAVEL KIT " set-up on a B 737 Combo; it included air jets in front of the engine intakes to keep debris out, and ... A PIECE OF PLYWOOD behind the nose wheels, to keep gravel from damaging the undercarriage !!! Very LOW - TECH - but it worked. I believe Continental had this set-up on a few planes too, used on the Pacific Island runs.
