Ya but some damn fool sure as hell did! But at least the candidate was honest - told us he would indeed change everything. But I guess no one cared, or did all those flattered shallow voters think change of any sort would just be so magical; or was it just that there was no viable alternative running.
Still; now that we have so-called change - we've got no one to blame but ourselves if we don't like it.
Personally though, I don't think I've seen much real change at all. It's depression pure and simple - it ain't change! And there ain't nobody or no gov't on either side of heaven, or hell, ever going to fix it - and that ain't gonna change either. Nobody's going to ever "fix it"; but time will eventually heal all wounds - if the wounds are left alone and just allowed to heal.
If the railroads aren't keeping their suppliers alive, you can bet railroad CEOs don't see any point in doing so - they won't be needing suppliers for years to come anyhow. And that bodes very ominously for the railroads themselves.
Think nationalization, or a centrally planned economy that runs everything into the ground - as it always has throughout history. Didn't the candidate admit that his policies would bankrupt the power generation industry (he was honest)? But apparently no one cared! Doesn't matter, we won't be needing electricity anyway.
But even that wouldn't be much of a change. Wilson tried it. Roosevelt tried it. Johnson tried it. Wilson's try flopped on its face. Roosevelt's attempt prolonged the great depression for years until the war, Johnson's "Great Society" brought us years of "stagflation" and "malaise". But we just keep on trying - we never learn - no matter who is in office.
Bob2 is right. This is a depression, and the dominoes are falling one by one, faster and faster; and will be for years to come. Some of those dominoes are the railroads themselves.
But this is all OK! Don't ya know? President Change has the magical mojo. He'll take care of us - just you wait and see. Of course, all decisions will have to be made in Washington, by the elite; as we the poeple are obviously too stupid to make any for ourselves.
We've proved that, or at least some damn fool did!
