The current Alstom facility (underneath BART, just before it goes underground enroute to SF), is very cramped and all work must be done outdoors. When it was first located there, it was adjacent to the Amtrak wash rack, and the back leg of the wye led right to the coachyard. The new coachyard is farther away, on a very indirect route. It's about a three-mile round trip for the Amtrak yard crew and can take as much as 3-4 hours, depending on congestion on the main line and in the UP yard. It sounds like the move to Mare Island will be a big improvement in their facility, although it will be interesting to see how the equipment is delivered there from Oakland (might make for some interesting railfanning). Since Siemens up in Sacramento will have no more to do with these cars, Alstom's move to new digs may allow them to expand their business.
