Back in the 40's when GE came out with the 44-tonner Cat D-17000 V-8 Cat diesels were standard equipment. I believe that Cat stayed with what they were good at...lower horsepower industrial diesel engines.
At that time, EMC, EMD, ALCo, Baldwin, etc. were trying to capture the locomotive market, and succeeded to a degree. Once GE realized that the money was in the smaller industrial sized units for the war effort and not the 44-tonner (which was a RAILROAD unit with its 64 volt electrical system (vs 32 volt industrial) it standardized on Cummins engines (HBI; LI600; various turboed versions) it found its niche in the military and industrial markets.
There are still a number of 44-tonners running around with their original D-17000 Cats but parts are becoming scarce and repowering is, in most cases, the preferred solution.
