I think that the interest in having a muscle car is awesome. Horsepower to spare.... the smell of exhaust from an open carb........
In some respects the major population likes cars. Weather it be some vintage, European, concept-type, "rice rockets", racing......well there are many facets of being interested in an internal combustion vehicle. The same can be said with railroads. I met a fellow years ago that had no interest in trains, but loved the railroad graffiti. He would take his scrapbook of photos to railroad shows and share his interest in the hobby- even if it was semi-railroad related. It's a real shame that many people completely shun interest in a multi-thousand HP prime mover that can make your boots shake and chest vibrate.
Each "foamer" (hate that reference to anyone that takes pictures of trains) has a particular personal liking to the hobby. There are a few out there that have a "holier than thou" attitude, and think that their rivet counting impresses everybody. Not true- but there are some out there that you get stuck talking to for what seems like an eternity.
I'm glad to be a railfan. Sure beats some of those other crazy hobbies like bird watching, stamp collecting and riding rollercoasters. I'm sure those interests would get raised eyebrows by your peers.
