Do the math. How much does it cost to keep a mainline open per mile? Look at the forementioned trains and their frequency. Then factor in the few sheckels that Amtrak pays UP for the Starlight. Is the Coast Line viable? The answer is no. They can pull the plug at any moment. That's why foamy foamers want to see some revenue generating traffic return, or it will go the way of the Modoc.
