I was at U I back in '95 and '96 - while the trains managed to show up about twice a week (and roughly at about the same times/days for both the BN and the Palouse River), the track was in crappy condition then and the trains had just a few cars. Beyond Moscow the track was embargoed.
The times I drove up to Potlatch I didn't think anything was ever handled on that line as I never saw a train, a car (other than the all-door boxcar that was rusting to the rails in the yard and is now a stage for the local city park)
Sad to see the tracks disused, but aside from grain there isn't much out there. College students don't translate to railroad business and if it weren't for WSU and UI - Moscow and Pullman simply wouldn't exist; or they would be nothing more than the proverbial "wide spot in the road".
