Congradulations, I`m glad to hear a rare happy ending. At Martinez in S.P. days (That is SOUTHERN PACIFIC) I had the chance myself to do a good turn. An Eastbound freight was doing a pick up / set out and I noticed a stuck brake shoe on a car that was not new. The wheel tread was clearly glowing the famous `HOT STUFF` orange as well as the wheel intermittantly skidding on the rail in both directions. As I was at the passenger station, I had the agent call the bridge operator who, called the dispatcher who, called the train that finally stopped. Soon the R.R. police officer for the area showed up, then the train`s actual brakeman. After they verified that which I identified, the unhappy brakeman made the statement that he was `Too old for this kind of stuff`. At that time I was quietly thinking I may have saved the railroad another law suit by preventing the wheel from dissintigrating and falling on the heads of the passengers on the platform. It seems train passengers just can`t appreciate being crushed by a boxcar like in the old days. Anyhoo, I also suggest people be vigilant and at the same time not interfere with operations unnecessarily.
