I, too, like the vertical shot better, though both are nice photos. I think that going-away shots are much underappreciated and can sometimes show just as much about railroading as the shots of approaching trains.
I also like bridges and other large structures which take a lot of effort and engineering to complete. This is the photo (in a higher resolution version) that I have as the desktop image on my netbook portable computer:

The Trisana Bridge is a major landmark in western Austria, not just a railroad landmark. And, while European freight trains are often considered small, mountain railroading still takes a lot of power. This freight of about 40-50 cars has two 8,000 hp electrics up front and another at the rear pushing.
