In many cases, the vertical format works best for a certain shot. I think that the bias against it largely comes from the fact that computer monitors favor a landscape layout. As soon as somebody makes a "portrait" monitor (which would favor a Word document anyway), popularity would probably increase. Ask any magazine editor or layout person which format is preferred:)--especially fot the all-important Cover Shot.
