Besides my Grandpa's basement in Oakland, the 1947 convention delegates also took a ride on the Key System across the Bay Bridge and then a ride on the cable cars to Fisherman's Wharf as well as the interconnecting MUNI streetcars.. This Key System--SF tour was also on the Tour agenda..
My grandfather had a "Guest Book" for the delegates to sign when they came to see how Live Steam trains can operate in your home.. I have this book in my archives today. It reads like a whos-who of the model RR world:
Signatures in this book include "Al Kalmbach" , "Bill Walthers", "Linn Westcott", "Whit Towers", John Allen (The Wizard of Monterey) and so many , many others. My grandfather told me that when all the delegates started arriving in the neighborhood by Tour Bus, the neighbors wondered what the heck was going on. (grin)
But he gave them a show they probably never forgot. As one delegate remarked later on :
"Open the Windows"-- "Light Off the Boilers" -- "Run Trains" ... YES, it was just that easy.
Unfortunately the house was torn down in June-1961 and only memories remain !!
