Back in October of 1957 by virtue of seniority, my late father was offered a chance to fly a Pan American B-377 Stratocruiser from Aukland, NZ to the South Pole. His Captain for the flight was Seattle Chief Pilot Ralph Savory. This was the first flight there by commercial airliner and was a charter for the USN with Admiral Dufek greeting the aircraft when it sat down on the ice.
Yesterday, Ralph turned 100 years young in nearby Santa Rosa. I spoke with him on the phone today & he sounds great with a sharp memory. Ralph had a lot of time in Pan Am's flying boats and earlier aircraft. Quite a career.
