I know this question comes from someone who doesn't know electric motors very well, but here goes...

How about the brushes? I have replaced my drill's brushes a few times, and it has helped with it's operation. I think the construction of my drill motor is similar to the American Flyer's motor in terms of its basic operation.
Could be that access to the worn component is not available. Should be some kind of aftermarket can motor available. I bet American Flyer never thought their products would be so sought-after many years later, eh?
