Check out my posting to Almo's posting. Sound like you have the original brushes. The AF motor (unless you have the uncommon DC version, which will have DC on the loco cab sides) has a wound field so the electrical current has to be connected properly for it to run--there's 4 wires there (If you have 5 wires, the fifth just goes to the smoke unit and headlight so they get full track voltage).
