The nose mounted (low) headlamp was better in areas prone to fog and snow for forward crew
visibility under those conditions. The high mounted headlamp would illuminate the fog or
snow between the windshields and the locomotive nose and scatter the light making it much
more difficult to see. The high mounted Mars or Gyralite was placed correctly, in my opinion,
those could be extinguished under fog/snow conditions and run with the lower headlamp. All of this is a moot point since "Ditch Lights". Their low placement allows the upper headlamp, to be dimmed under those conditions, so that visibility is actually better, in my opinion than without them.
