We have SD40-2s over here that have ditch lights wired in to a separate switch on the control stand, while others were wired in to the headlight switch. So on the ones that are wired separately you can shut off the headlight or ditch lights individually, although, at least on the division I run on it is a romper room no no to have your lights on dim AT ALL during the daylight hours (unless the rules require it). And in all honesty, bright headlights do not bother me from an approaching train during the day. Plus, if you do dim them both for whatever reason, and forget to turn on one or the other back to bright and then go over a road crossing...enough said. Id rather have them on one switch.
