Maybe. Probably not, though. Here's why:
Firstly, no UP employee was adversely effected by the transaction; i.e., no one ended being out on the street, and no one was going to suddenly find themselves working under shortline wages, benefits and work rules. Seniority being what it is, you work what you can hold. Besides, it was well known by the crews that the branch was slowly withering on the vine and UP would eventually either get rid of it or abandon it.
Secondly, the attempted damage to the 48 was something that a railroad employee would know wasn't going to disable the engine. If someone wanted to kill it, there are far more effective ways of doing so.
