I rode the 1967 trip too. Round trip to Barstow from LAUPT (or was the loading point Pasadena? to avoid the terminal charges?) was a whopping $10. Two PAs, three coaches, the lunch counter car used on the DelMar race trains, the Santa Fe 1509 and the former CPR 599. All heavyweight. Had lunch at the Harvey House in Barstow. Ahh, to be 15 again.
Santa Fe would not permit occupancy of the CPR 599, the Mountain Observation Car with the open ends at train speeds over 30 mph, so that meant only up from San Bernardino to just past Summit. Danger from flying debris. In May 1967, the 599 was attached to the back of the San Joaquin Daylight, and SP didn't have such a restriction. Didn't really matter, at over 70mph, the car was almost uninhabitable due to the wind and dust!
