SHUTTERBUGS ON ALTAMONT AND ACE

I am trying to shoot a photo of an ACE train passing Altamont that will show the old town (I know, the garage) in the background as part of a press article on ACE. I've seen some good pictures on this board from that region and know there are many better photographers here than I am. Any tips? I will be using a Canon Eos with an 18-55mm lens.

Is there a way to get access to the "north" side of the tracks for the photo, or is access too restricted to do it. If so, I'll try something else. Suggestions cheerfully accepted. Any comments on the light -- better for this in morning or afternoon to highlight the colors on the train.
