Bob, hopefully someone who knows the area well, will chime in. Until then, I'll offer a high tech tool to aid the compass suggestion.

Try the Photographer's Ephemeris at :TPE

It's shareware, and works very well. It allows you select a location (a Google Maps overlay) and then will show you the direction of the sun and moon, on any given day. Lots of tools. Highly recommend it.
