Let's be straight about the North Coast Railroad up to Eureka , CA. Yes, the road will be revamped from Napa to Willits. This is because Sonoma County is using it for their light rail system which is supported with state and federal funds and a local sales tax. The fact that the North Coast Rail Authority moved their headquarters from Eureka to Willits is an admission that the northern section is being abandoned. The route through the Eel River canyon has never been stable and requires excessive maintenance expenses, Furthermore, the route has rarely shown a profit. The idea that container traffic can be loaded at Humboldt Bay dragged down the coast to UP lines near Fairfield is completely backwards. Most of the traffic is headed east and it makes no sense to pay more to end up only 40 mikles from the Port of Oakland. This is the reality of economics.
